Origins

The first Free Methodist work was begun in Yangon among the Chinese by a Burmese student who studied at Holy Light Seminary in Taiwan and returned to his own country to plant a church. At about the same time, several churches among the Chin in the northwest of the country expressed interest in affiliating with the FMC. The Asian Pacific Free Methodist Missions Association (APFMMA) appointed the Taiwan Free Methodist Church to offer continued assistance to the developing church in 1994, which has since been registered with the government. The Taiwan Conference has taken on the responsibility of training leaders in both the Chinese and Chin churches.

Present Ministries

Free Methodist ministries include work among the Chinese and the Chin tribal people. The Chinese church plant in Yangon offers ministry to youth who come to the city for education.

Most of the Chin churches are located in the mountains, with one church plant in Yangon. Ministries in Yangon include a kindergarten, boarding school and Bible college, which are managed by the Yangon Chin church plant. The kindergarten receives assistance from International Child Care Ministries. Seventeen preaching points report to the Chin Mission District Annual Meeting. Nine of these have over 30 in attendance at Sunday services, five have over 60 in attendance and two have over 100.
