Origins

The Free Methodist Church was invited by the Hungarian Evangelical Fellowship (HEF) to supply public schools with English teachers. The first short-term missionary teacher went in 1990. Career missionaries arrived in Hungary in 1995.

Present Ministries

Two fellowships have been established in Hungary—one in Gyõr and the other in Budapest. The Gyõr meets in home groups. The Budapest fellowship has a leadership team comprised of missionaries Larry and Katie Winckles and Jan Coleman, as well as Hungarian leaders Tóth Júlia and Tóth Péter. One means of service and outreach into the community is through English classes and clubs that are held on the premises of a governmental social service agency. Recovery groups for people struggling with dependencies of any kind have recently been established, using Celebrate Recovery! materials. Already these groups are gaining a good reputation in the city.

Outreach

The church in Hungary supports the ministries of Oaza Children’s Homes and the Emanuel Christian Center in Arad, Romania.
