Origins

The Free Methodist mission in Haiti began in 1964 when Mildred Norbeck, a Free Methodist, turned over the independent mission she had founded to Free Methodist World Missions. The first Free Methodist church was organized in Port-au-Prince with 12 members. Miss Maxine Riddle, who had served with the original mission, was the first appointed missionary. In four years, the conference grew to 694 members. A Bible school was opened and primary schools started.

Present Ministries

The conference has an active evangelistic program and is growing rapidly. The International Child Care Ministries program makes it possible for thousands of Haitian children to attend school. Many of the churches operate a primary school. Nine secondary schools and a Bible school with a Theological Education by Extension (TEE) program provide additional training. Since 1986 the Dessalines Rural Health Program and hospital have provided health care to many Haitians.

An extensive group of VISA workers assist the Haitian church and missionaries in various ways. Missionaries work alongside the church in educational, agricultural, medical and International Child Care Ministries programs.

Due to increasing violence, the North American missionaries were withdrawn from the country in mid-2005, awaiting approved conditions. They returned in October 2006.

Outreach

The Latin America Director and the Haiti conference superintendents oversee the young Free Methodist work in French Guiana.
