Origins

Citizens of the Dominican Republic have emigrated to Puerto Rico in large numbers for economic reasons. In 1967 a Dominican pastor and his wife, Manuel and Joaquina García, began holding services for their fellow countrymen in their home. Two years later, this church in the capital city of San Juan was officially organized. In 1981 the Puerto Rican work became a mission district.

Present Ministries

The church has begun a strong outreach program and is attempting to cross cultural barriers and reach out to unsaved Puerto Rican families in the neighborhoods. A new property was purchased for the Barrio Obrero church in 2001 and has been renovated. In 2002, a second floor was added to this building. In 2004, the Puerto Rican church became a provisional annual conference.

Outreach

Also in 2004, the Barrio Obrero church sent one missionary family to Jackson, Michigan, and a second couple to the neighboring island of Antigua, in addition to several individuals to church plants in the greater San Juan area.
